Weekly yoga pose - Dancing Shiva pose or Parivrtta Hasta Padangusthasana
This week's yoga pose is the Dancing Shiva pose, or Parivrtta Hasta Padangusthasana.
Standing balance poses develop patience and focus. This yoga pose provides an opportunity to develop balance while simultaneously stretching and strengthening the legs.
This and all other poses that involve a torso twist massage the digestive system, and by improving digestion, they can also help the body detoxify.
In Indian mythology, Shiva is the god of destruction and transformation. In Sanskrit, the word "shiva" means liberation or freedom. It is believed that Shiva helps one find a state of peace and bliss amidst change and chaos. Practicing the Dancing Shiva yoga pose offers an opportunity to find peace and stability within oneself amidst a challenge.
This yoga pose has several different variations. When learning the pose, it is easier to keep the upper leg bent while holding the outside of the knee with your hand. As you become more comfortable with the pose, perform the same movement with the leg extended.
You can encounter this exercise, for example, in vinyasa and hatha yoga classes.
Happy practicing and enjoy the process!
